New Special Investigator hired in Cache County

By Savannah Perkins

A new Cache County Special Investigator has been hired and was introduced at the Cache County Council meeting on Feb. 9.

“This position became available so I threw my name in the hat and they picked me," said Shawn Marshall, a native of Cache County. “I am really excited and glad to bring my training, experience and skills over to this office and work in partnership with the people over here.”

Marshall retired after 21 years working as a police officer for Logan city. He was a detective for 11 years, during six of which he was with major crimes. The last six years Marshall investigated mainly white collar crimes.

“Sounds like we are lucky to have someone with those kinds of qualifications as our special investigator,” said Greg Merrill, the council chairman.

“The special investigator will follow up on issues that come up,” said Tony Baird, the deputy county attorney. “He deals with the clean-up work.”

Baird said law enforcement will send cases up for the special investigator to get involved in, ultimately bringing the cases to a conclusion.

“The special investigator will be involved in all types of cases but the majority will be sexual assault and domestic violence cases,” Baird said.

Baird said Robert Bolton, the former part-time special investigator, retired at the end of the 2015 after being diagnosed with cancer. Marshall explained that after Bolton became ill, James Swink, the county attorney, recognized the need for the special investigator position to become full-time and therefore Marshall was hired at the beginning of 2016.

“My main focus is to help make sure there are no unexpected surprises down the line,” Marshall said. “I make sure everything is in order and I am looking forward to being here and helping the county attorney as best I can.”
